Hawaiian Pizza is such an easy homemade pizza recipe!! This recipe actually turned me on to pineapple pizza – it’s such a polarizing flavor combo! You’ll love this one because it’s got BACON!

Why you’ll LOVE this recipe

Have you ever had a time where you have to eat your words? A time when you’ve said you positively absolutely never-ever-ever would like something and then you try it and, shock of all shocks, you DO like it? You see where I’m going here, right?

I’ve always said pineapple didn’t belong on pizza….but I was wrong. Hawaiian pizza is delicious – especially with BACON on it! Fresh pineapple, crispy bacon, savory ham, delicious cheese and a homemade pizza crust – this is going to be your Friday night favorite!

Ingredients Needed

It’s EASY to make, I promise! If you’re scared of working with yeast – don’t be. Once you do it a few times you’ll be amazed at how simple it is. This recipe is probably the easiest yeast recipe you’ll ever make – you don’t even need a mixer!

  • First, you need to pick the right yeast: Instant Yeast! This recipe is written for instant (Rapid Rise) yeast – do not use active dry.
  • Flour – all-purpse flour is best
  • Sugar – I always use granulated – this helps activate the yeast

Hawaiian Pizza Toppings

I think the last time I checked, Hawaiian Pizza was one of the most ordered pizzas and the most controversial. Pineapple on pizza? Hmmmm. But, guys, I’m a testament that it’s actually GOOD. Pinky swear! Besides pizza sauce and cheese, Hawaiian pizza ingredients are:

  • Pizza Sauce – use your favorite store-bought or my homemade pizza sauce recipe.
  • Mozzarella Cheese – shred your own for the best melting
  • Ham or Canadian Bacon – Use what you like
  • Pineapple – Use canned or fresh pineapple chunks
  • Bacon – Cook until crispy, then drain the oil.

How to make Pineapple Pizza

  1. To start your homemade pizza dough, you first need to whisk together the dry ingredients.
  2. Then, heat the water to between 120-130°F. It’s easiest to do this if you have an instant read thermometer, but you if you don’t, simply think “hot bathwater”.
  3. Stir the water and oil together into the dry ingredients until the dough forms a ball. Then you have to knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until it comes together. Once it rests for 10 minutes, you’re ready to top it and bake it.
  4. Preheat your oven to a HIGH temperature – this ensures a cooked crust and a crunchy crust too! Stretch your pizza dough to fit your pan.
  5. Top your pizza with sauce, then sprinkle on the cheese, ham, pineapple, and bacon crumbles.

How long do you cook a homemade pizza?

Pizza bakes at a high temperature (450°F) so it bakes pretty quickly. It depends on how many toppings you have and how thick your crust is, but for this recipe it’ll be done in about 13-15 minutes. The high oven temperature helps the bottom get crunchy and the top get brown!

Expert Tips

  • You can use pepperoni in place of ham if you prefer.
  • Add a sprinkling of jalapeños for a spicy pineapple pizza.
  • Storage: store leftovers in the refrigerator. I love to reheat pizza in the air fryer.

FAQs

How do you know when pizza is done baking?

You’ll know it’s done because it’ll be golden around the edges and the cheese will be bubbling. Just wait a few minutes and then slice and eat!

What’s the best cheese for pineapple pizza?

Mozzarella is standard; shred your own mozzarella cheese. Cheese that comes pre-shredded has a coating on it that makes it not melt as easily!

How do you store leftovers?

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

  1. Yes! Pineapple on a Hawaiian pizza is terrific!

Now, for additional variants, I’d recommend using a basil pesto sauce instead of a tomato-based pizza sauce (I have a ton of home-grown basil every year and make fresh pesto and freeze it for use in many recipes). I’d also suggest adding Feta cheese – a great combination with the pineapple and the pesto sauce!

  2. OMG this is AMAZING BUTโ€ฆ.. even better was the ADDITION of sliced Maraschino Cherries!!! I used to buy this Hawaiian pizza back in the mid 1970โ€™s in Maine and could never find it exactly that way since. Absolutely DELICIOUS!๐Ÿ˜‹

  3. All yeast dough needs to proof. It makes a lighter dough and much better all round taste. Once done knock back. No second rise needed. It can now be frozen. If not freezing, no need to roll ot, use your very clean fingers to shape pizza base. Add ingredients of your choice and cook. Serve with fresh chopped salad.

  4. Here in South Africa it is common for restaurants and people in general to add mushroom to our Hawaiian pizza. Love it!
