Cute Halloween food alert!

Is it me or did October creep up on us this year? I feel like just yesterday school was starting and now we’re less than three months from Christmas!

This time of year is a blur for me usually; it’s the busiest time of year for food bloggers. Working in this business is weird: now, when Halloween is out in the stores I’ve moved onto Christmas. By November I’ll be thinking about football, healthy recipes and hearts.

Basically, that’s my roundabout way of saying I made these treats in August and the Halloween party I’m going to at the end of October will get pumpkin pie and snowball cookies as the dessert.

Looking for fun Halloween treats? Halloween Rice Krispie Treats are fun, yummy and SO EASY to make!

Rice Krispie Treats are such a classic recipe. They’re usually the one I gravitate to last at a party but whenever I eat one I’m reminded just how much I do like them.

(Case in point: the day after this photo shoot my mouth was raw from binge eating. Am I the only one that does that?)

With just a few ingredients you can make these Halloween Krispy Treats – your kids will love them. Heck, your KIDS can even make them!

I don’t just use the recipe on the Rice Krispies box, by the way. I use a BETTER recipe: mine.

I have a pet peeve with crispy treats: they’re usually not gooey enough or not thick enough. I like a SUPER thick cereal treat that’s extra gooey, so my recipe checks all those boxes.

How do you make thick and gooey Krispie Treats?

By using 9 cups of cereal and 15 ounces of marshmallows, that’s how. I make them in a 9×13-inch baking pan so it makes enough for a crowd.

I like thick Krispie Treats and I cannot lie…

What makes these Halloween Rice Krispy Treats?

The fun add-ins!

Really you can use any sort of Halloween themed candy you like, but I added:

  • Candy Corn
  • Halloween M&Ms (they have a few different kinds these days, pick your favorite)
  • Halloween sprinkles (which you can buy at the craft store)
  • You could even make Pistachio Rice Krispie Treats for a spooky green treat!

I just love how fun and easy crispy treats are – and yummy too!

Some FAQ about how to make Rice Krispie treats:

How do you melt hard marshmallows?

This happens to me all the time! Anyone else have a kid who sneaks marshmallows for a snack and then leaves the bag open?

While fresh marshmallows are best for cereal treats, you can usually use hard or stale ones. I find that you have to use the stovetop method for melting them, and they’ll take longer. Skip the microwave method for hard marshmallows.

How do you keep rice crispy treats from sticking to your hands?

Pressing the treats into the pan while hot is an important step – but they’re sticky! Without some prep you’ll come away wearing the treats.

Spray your hands with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking!

PRO TIP

I use nonstick spray on my hands to make them nonstick – this makes it super easy to press the treats into the pan.

Why are my Rice Krispie treats hard?

This happens for one of a few reasons:

  1. The cereal is stale – always use fresh cereal.
  2. You used too much cereal or not enough marshmallows.

The ratio of marshmallow to cereal is super important for Krispy Treats, which is why you should use my recipe.

Instructions

  • Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with foil and spray with cooking spray. Set aside.

  1. Bought pumpkin spice marshmallows at Walmart to use in making rice krispie treats. Since they come in an 8 oz bag, I’ll use regular marshmallows also to get the 15 ozs. Then I can just put the sprinkles on top after pressing into the pan.

    1. I was worried about that so I let it cool for a few minutes and then I used jimmies sprinkles which worked well. After a little more cooling I mixed in the chocolate m&ms.

    2. Little late to this recipe. But after reading this comment. I froze all my candies and sprinkles a few hours before making. I had no issues with melting.

  2. I love your beautiful pictures. I made two batches, following the recipe exactly and one batch was hard, one was gooey like it should be. I think my main complaint is that I cannot find ‘halloween’ M&Ms and my sprinkles just are awful. They melted into the first batch so fast that the treats are black-ish. Not an appetizing color. Oh well. I will be making a 3rd batch this afternoon and, fingers crossed, I can get them to work! I did use all fresh ingredients, too.

  3. I love this idea! Thank you, Dorothy!
I wanted to add another reason for hard Rice Krispie treats… cooking your marshmallows too long. I learned this the hard way. As soon as the marshmallows are melted remove them from the heat and add the cereal. Some years ago I let the marshmallows bubble on the stove top while I was making dinner. Everything seemed fine until I tried to cut into them and they were as hard as a rock.
