Ingredients in CAKE MIX SCONES

Ingredients in Cake Mix Scones

  • Funfetti Cake Mix – you could also use plain yellow cake mix or any flavor. I prefer Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines brands
  • Flour – you just need a bit of extra flour to take these from cake to scones.
  • Cold Butter – dice it then place it back in the refrigerator to keep it cold.
  • Milk – heavy cream or regular milk is best to keep these moist.
  • Sprinkles – because they’re fun and pretty!
  • Chocolate Chips – optional but love chocolate in everything!

How to make scones out of cake mix

  • Stir cake mix and flour in a large bowl. Add cold buttered use a pastry cutter to work the butter into the flour mixture until it is crumbly.
  • Create a well in the center of the mixture and pour the milk in the center. Stir gently, keeping the dough in the center of the bowl, until the milk is incorporated.
  • Stir only until the mixture comes together (there will be small chunks of butter still, and that’s okay).
  • Stir in chocolate chips.
  • Sprinkle a small bit of flour over the dough and flour your hands. Turn the dough out onto the prepared cookie sheet covered with parchment paper. Gently press the dough to flatten into a circle that is an 8 inch diameter. I made mine into a heart, so you can really make whatever shape you want.
  • Use a greased knife to cut into wedges. Top with sprinkles and gently press them to make them stick.

How long do you bake scones?

Bake scones at 400 degrees for about 20-25 minutes or until they’re light golden and cooked through. Don’t over bake them or they might turn out dry.

  1. I made these! In theory they would be adorable, but I’m not sure what happened… 2.5 cups of dry, a stick of butter, and a cup of milk turned my mixture into a soup ?. I ended up trying to compensate with more cake mix and it just became cake batter. I don’t know why it was so liquid-y, did I miss a step??

    1. Did you use 2 1/2 cups of cake mix? Or 1 1/4 cups cake mix and 1 1/4 cups of flour? The flour called for should help make the batter thicker.

  2. Thank you for answering me so quickly! I’m going to make these tonight ๐Ÿ˜€ (The page wouldn’t let me reply to you? Weird)

  3. Hi! I’m sorry to bother you but I was wondering if the flour in this was all purpose or self rising? It doesn’t say

    1. It’s all-purpose! I always use all-purpose (and in current recipes, try to remember to say that) so you can use AP unless otherwise stated!

    1. I made mine into a heart and cut it into wedges (for Valentine’s Day) but it would be the equivalent of a 9″ round. You can cut them as big or as small as you like!
