Ingredients in CAKE MIX SCONES

Ingredients in Cake Mix Scones

  • Funfetti Cake Mix – you could also use plain yellow cake mix or any flavor. I prefer Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines brands
  • Flour – you just need a bit of extra flour to take these from cake to scones.
  • Cold Butter – dice it then place it back in the refrigerator to keep it cold.
  • Milk – heavy cream or regular milk is best to keep these moist.
  • Sprinkles – because they’re fun and pretty!
  • Chocolate Chips – optional but love chocolate in everything!

How to make scones out of cake mix

  • Stir cake mix and flour in a large bowl. Add cold buttered use a pastry cutter to work the butter into the flour mixture until it is crumbly.
  • Create a well in the center of the mixture and pour the milk in the center. Stir gently, keeping the dough in the center of the bowl, until the milk is incorporated.
  • Stir only until the mixture comes together (there will be small chunks of butter still, and that’s okay).
  • Stir in chocolate chips.
  • Sprinkle a small bit of flour over the dough and flour your hands. Turn the dough out onto the prepared cookie sheet covered with parchment paper. Gently press the dough to flatten into a circle that is an 8 inch diameter. I made mine into a heart, so you can really make whatever shape you want.
  • Use a greased knife to cut into wedges. Top with sprinkles and gently press them to make them stick.

How long do you bake scones?

Bake scones at 400 degrees for about 20-25 minutes or until they’re light golden and cooked through. Don’t over bake them or they might turn out dry.

  1. I’m so obsessed with sprinkles… I love it when I find a new funfetti recipe! Plus, something about starting off with cake mix makes the thought of trying to make scones for the first time a little less intimidating. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I am super picky about my scones…which is why I started making my own too! Dry scones that crumble are the worst!!! Yours looks so soft and delicious. Love that cake mix can be used for breakfast items…and of course I heart all the sprinkles in these!!!

  3. This is SUCH a good idea. Cake mix makes everything better. (Do you really eat this kind of stuff for breakfast?? ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. I eat mine more for a mid-morning snack. I’d love it for breakfast, but it would make me feel sick all day. Jordan, however, has no problems with it, ha!
