This Chocolate French Toast is an easy overnight French toast recipe is full of chocolate, from the milk to the chocolate chips! It’s the perfect indulgent brunch recipe – you’re going to love it.
Hot Chocolate French Toast Casserole
This recipe is a great for brunch or dessert! It is made from thick slices of bread that soaked with a chocolate mixture and topped with chocolate chips inside. I love using chocolate milk for mine to get double the chocolate. You are going to want to wait 2 or more hours after pouring the milk on the bread to really let everything soak up!
I love topping this recipe with whipped cream to really bring everything together! A side of fresh berries or bananas would taste so good too. Chocolate French Toast that you can assemble ahead of time – it’s genius and amazingly good.
Ingredients Needed
- Day-Old Bread Slices: These will be sliced into bite size pieces-I used a sourdough loaf, but you could use brioche, white bread, or whole wheat bread!
- Chocolate Chips: Regular size or mini chocolate chips.
- Eggs: A must when making French toast!
- Chocolate Milk: Use your favorite brand chocolate milk (even nondairy, like chocolate Almondmilk).
Substitutions & Variations
- Non-dairy milk can be used to make the milk mixture
- Don’t have chocolate milk? Make your own hot cocoa mix or add chocolate syrup to regular milk.
- There is no substitute for the eggs, unfortunately, but you can use any kind of bread you like.
How to make Chocolate French Toast Recipe
- Place bread cubes into the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle with chocolate chips.
- Whisk eggs in a large bowl. Whisk in milk, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract. Pour egg mixture over bread and press down lightly with your hands to soak it all up.
- Let sit for at least 2 hours before baking. You can also cover and refrigerate overnight.
- When ready to bake: preheat oven to 350°F. If your casserole has been in the refrigerator, let it come to room temperature while the oven preheats. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until the casserole is cooked through and light golden brown around the edges.
Expert Tips
- If you have stale bread, you will want the bread to soak longer in the other ingredients.
- Make this recipe ahead of time so you can be with you family in the morning and not in the kitchen!
- Add extra chocolate chips on top to make it even more chocolatey! Or you could dust the top with powdered sugar and drizzle some maple syrup over the top! I love to serve it warm with whipped cream and chocolate sauce.
- Add a touch of salt on top for a finishing touch – it cuts the sweetness but also adds tons of flavor to the chocolate.

- When ready to bake: preheat oven to 350°F. If your casserole has been in the refrigerator, let it come to room temperature while the oven preheats. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until the casserole is cooked through. (This will take longer if your dish is cold.)
- Serve warm with whipped cream and chocolate sauce.
Recipe Notes
- Use any kind of bread – a crusty bread like French bread or sourdough or brioche is the best. Stale bread works even better!
- You can use almond milk or any nondairy chocolate milk – or make your own chocolate milk with plain milk and chocolate sauce.

I LOVE how gooey and chocolatey this looks! I bet it tastes amazing and I love that it uses chocolate almond milk. I was obsessed with that stuff when I was pregnant, haha! I also don’t like doing elaborate breakfasts in the morning (though breakfast food is my absolute favorite!) I just can’t get my head in the game (or my butt in the kitchen) that early.
Wow! This looks A-MAZ-ING! The boys in my house love chocolate chips and French toast but I’ve never combined them. And you make it so easy to do with the option of prepping it the night before and baking the next morning! I love that! I’m going to have to try this out at my house and see how many thumbs up I get.

I saw a pic of you all glowing and glistening after your hot yoga on some social media a week or so ago and meant to ask you about it! I am so glad you love it. There is nothing like the 2 pound sweat loss after a hot yoga class to make you feel pretty awesome ๐ And sounds like you also did a sculpt class too. I am so proud of you! I don’t wear socks. It’s gross but its’ just…hot yoga. Yoga towels are a must!
