Who needs a bakery when you can make these delicious 4th of July M&M Cookies in just a few minutes? These cookies are everyone’s favorite sugar cookies but with patriotic M&Ms.
M&M 4th of July Cookies
Want to know a horribly kept secret? Sugar Cookies are my favorite. Seriously, I love Chocolate Chip (and I know you all do too) but sugar cookies are the ones I will always go for first. I love them with frosting, plain, with sprinkles, or with M&Ms…I’ve never met a sugar cookie I didn’t like.
This 4th of July cookie recipe is basically my simple chewy sugar cookies but with red, white, and blue M&Ms. You will love these firework cookies for your 4th of July party!
4th of July sugar cookies are the perfect treat for your Independence Day BBQ or just a fun snack to enjoy. Get creative and decorate them however you like – get the kids involved too!
Ingredients Needed
- Butter: softened at room temperature so it’s easy to mix in the batter
- Sugar: I’m using granulated sugar but caster sugar works just as fine
- Egg yolk: be sure to use this trick to learn how to separate your egg without special tools! The extra egg yolk adds a bit of chew to the cookie.
- Cream of tartar: this is an essential baking ingredient. Learn what is cream of tartar used for and its substitutions.
- M&Ms: use any color you like but since this is a 4th of July cookie recipe, I will be using patriotic colors
How to make 4th of July cookies
- Preheat the oven to 350°F then line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.
- Cream the butter and sugar in a bowl until the mixture is fluffy.
- Add the egg, egg yolk, and a teaspoon of vanilla extract and mix until smooth, then mix in baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt. Add flour and mix until cookie dough forms. Stir in the M&Ms.
- Scoop cookie dough balls and place them on a cookie sheet. Bake for 11-15 minutes, or until the bottoms are just starting to get golden and the top is no longer glossy.
- Cool for at least 10 minutes on the cookie sheet before removing and cool completely before frosting.

- Press a few more M&Ms on the top of each of the cookies as soon as they come out of the oven for an even prettier cookie.
- You can use any flavor M&Ms you’d like!
- Switch of the colors of the M&Ms for any holiday.

Ingredients
For the Cookies
- ¾ cup (170g) unsalted butter, softened
- ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 large egg yolk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon cream of tartar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 cups (248g) all-purpose flour
- 2 cups patriotic M&Ms or any color
Instructions
Make the Cookies:
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Line two cookie sheet with silicone baking mats or parchment paper.
- Cream butter and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (or a large bowl with a hand mixer). Cream until the mixture is fluffy, about one minute.
- Add the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla and mix until smooth, then mix in baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt. Add flour and mix until cookie dough forms. Stir in 1 1/2 cups of M&Ms.
- Scoop 2 tablespoon sized balls 2-inches apart on cookie sheet. Bake for 11-15 minutes, or until the bottoms are just starting get golden and the top is no longer glossy. Press a few more M&Ms on the top of each of the cookie as soon as they come out of the oven. Cool at least 10 minutes on cookie sheet before removing. Cool completely before frosting.
