This Hula Pie is the dessert of my dreams! It’s got an Oreo cookie crust, macadamia nut vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, and a hefty dose of chopped macadamia nuts on top. It’s easy and no-bake and a copycat of the pie you get in Hawaii.
Hula Pie Recipe
If you’ve ever been to Hawaii you’ve probably heard of and/or tasted Hula Pie. It’s a classic dessert created at Duke’s and it’s EPIC! (Hello, ice cream, Oreos, and hot fudge.) I first had it on Maui and I dreamed of it until I could have it again!
This is the perfect summer ice cream pie recipe with a creamy and crunchy texture thanks to the macadamia nuts – plus it’s got the best flavor from the chocolate cookie crust, hot fudge and whipped cream. Pile that ice cream high because at Duke’s the top of the pie is mile high!
Ingredients Needed
- Oreo Pie Crust: The recipe starts with an Oreo Cookie Crust. I love making the crusts myself because they taste so much better than store-bought, but it would be much easier to go that route, so do what you like best!
- Vanilla Ice Cream: Use your favorite or make my sweetened condensed milk ice cream recipe.
- Macadamia Nuts: A classic Hawaiian nut – buy them chopped or pulse in a food processor to chop them.
- Hot Fudge Sauce & Whipped Cream: For garnish!
How to make
- Grind cookies in a food processor and mix with melted butter (you don’t need to remove the cream from the Oreo cookies). Chill crust. Let the ice cream sit at room temperature until you’re able to stir it, but it’s not all the way melted.
- Place ice cream in a large bowl. Fold the macadamia nuts into the ice cream.
- Pile the ice cream mixture into the pie pan in a dome shape, then freeze until hardened.
- Spread the hot fudge over the top of the frozen pie. Sprinkle with more macadamia nuts. Freeze for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- To serve, top with whipped cream.
Expert Tips
- It’s easier to slice if you let it sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes.
- To make slicing the pie easier, use a warmed knife: dip your knife in a cup or bowl of hot water between cuts.
- If you want to make fresh whipped cream, beat 1 cup heavy cream to stiff peaks while adding vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons powdered sugar.
- Be sure to cover the pie with plastic wrap in the freezer.
FAQs
Store it in the freezer in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
Use no churn vanilla ice cream for ease – it’s delicious and easy to make yourself.

Recipe Notes

- Be sure to pile the ice cream high into the crust – the original Hula Pie is dome shaped.
- A food processor is the easiest way to chop macadamia nuts.
I can’t rate this pie as I’ve not made it yet but it looks really delicious! I live in Hawaii and have not heard about this pie. I’ll make it soon 🙂
